Tips on Caring for Your Baby After the Circumcision

We understand that parents will have worries and inquiries in the days after the circumcision of their baby boy. Please review the material below for specifics on how to care for your infant after circumcision.

How to care for your son in the first 24 hours following the circumcision:

1. Keep Your Baby Snugly Swaddled

Swaddling will help keep your baby warm and comfortable. We will give your baby a hospital gown to wear, and you can add additional layers of clothing as needed. Be sure to avoid overheating as overheating can cause increased crying and stress and can also increase the risk of infection.

2. Apply A Penile Vaseline Gauze Shield

We will apply a Vaseline gauze shield over the circumcision site to protect it, keep it moist and help control any bleeding. The shield should be applied immediately after the circumcision. If bleeding occurs, the shield should be removed, then reapplied after the bleeding stops.

3. Apply Pressure to the Incision Site

After the circumcision, you will notice a small amount of blood on your baby’s penis. You may see a small, white ‘bubble’ of fluid. You should gently pinch or press on the circumcision site until the area stops bleeding. This will take about 10 minutes.

4. Watch for Increasing Pain, Redness or Swelling

Check your baby’s incision site every 15 to 30 minutes in the first 24 hours to watch for signs of bleeding and ensure that the gauze shield is still in place. Call us right away if you notice an increased amount of bleeding or any redness, swelling, or increased pain at the circumcision site.

5. Clean Your Baby’s Circumcision Site

After the circumcision, you will notice a small amount of blood on your baby’s penis. You may see a small, white ‘bubble’ of fluid. You should gently pinch or press on the circumcision site until the area stops bleeding. This will take about 10 minutes.

You should clean your baby’s genitals after each diaper change. Gently pat your baby dry, then use clean gauze to gently wipe away any secretions or blood. You may notice a small amount of blood on the gauze after each diaper change. This is normal and will usually stop in 1 to 2 days.

What to Expect in the Following Weeks

In the first couple of weeks, your baby will experience some healing, which may include some bleeding, itching, and warmth or redness of the circumcision site. The healing process will likely result in a loose piece of skin at the circumcision site. This is normal and will eventually fall off, usually within a week. During the healing process, try to minimise your baby’s activity, so he is not putting more pressure on the circumcision site.

Parents should also be aware that circumcised babies may experience increased irritability for the first 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure. This is normal and is due to the discomfort of having an open circumcision site. The pain should decrease by 3 weeks after the circumcision as the site heals.

Conclusion

Circumcision is the most common surgery performed on newborn males in the United States. Your son will recover from the procedure relatively quickly and will be able to participate in activities as soon as he feels up to it.
